A Real-Life Example: Moira Olmsted's Struggle

Consider the case of Moira Olmsted, a 24-year-old mother pursuing a teaching degree at Central Methodist University. After returning to school following a pandemic-related break, Olmsted was managing a full-time job, caring for her toddler, and taking online courses while seven months pregnant with her second child. Her life was already a balancing act. But just a few weeks into her semester, she faced an unexpected setback: an assignment she submitted for a required class was flagged as AI-generated, and she received a zero.

For Olmsted, the accusation was devastating. Despite her explanation that she has autism and writes in a formulaic manner—characteristics that may have caused the AI detection tool to misinterpret her work—her professor insisted the flagging was justified. Though her grade was eventually restored after appealing to the student coordinator, she was warned that if her work was flagged again, the professor would treat it as plagiarism. The experience left her shaken, making her feel that her hard-earned academic progress could be derailed by a tool’s judgment, not her actual effort.

How AI Detectors Work—And Fail

AI detectors, such as Turnitin, GPTZero, and Copyleaks, use sophisticated algorithms to analyze written content and determine whether it’s likely generated by artificial intelligence. They often evaluate factors like "perplexity" (how complex or predictable the language is) and "burstiness" (how much variety exists in sentence construction). While these metrics can identify patterns typically seen in AI-generated text, they also introduce risks of false positives, especially for students whose writing styles deviate from the norm, including neurodivergent students or those learning English as a second language (ESL).

A 2023 study by Stanford University found AI detectors were particularly prone to error when analyzing work from ESL students, flagging over half of their essays as AI-generated. In contrast, the same tools were "near-perfect" when checking the essays of native English-speaking eighth graders. This discrepancy underscores how these tools can perpetuate biases, disproportionately impacting already vulnerable groups of students.

Even small error rates in AI detection can have large implications. Bloomberg Businessweek conducted a study using 500 essays submitted to Texas A&M University before ChatGPT was released, ensuring that none were AI-generated. The results? Leading detectors falsely flagged 1-2% of these essays as AI-generated. In an educational setting where millions of assignments are submitted annually, this seemingly small percentage translates into tens of thousands of false accusations each year.

The Real-Life Fallout of AI Missteps

The consequences of false flags go beyond just a lowered grade. Students like Olmsted have found their academic standing, reputation, and relationships with professors severely impacted. In another case, Ken Sahib, a multilingual student at Berkeley College, was accused of using AI to complete an assignment in his Introduction to Networking course. Despite his protests and evidence that his work was his own, the professor was unconvinced, stating that multiple AI detection tools confirmed the same result. Though Sahib passed the class, the incident irreparably damaged his relationship with the professor.

Some students have taken extreme measures to protect themselves. To avoid future accusations, Olmsted began documenting her entire writing process—screen-recording herself as she worked and using Google Docs to track every edit, all to create a "digital paper trail" to prove her work was her own. Such actions, while necessary to avoid false accusations, shift the focus away from learning and creativity toward self-defense, undermining the educational experience.

The Problem of Overreliance on AI Detectors

AI detection tools are widely used because they offer educators a quick and easy way to check for academic dishonesty. According to a 2023 survey by the Center for Democracy & Technology, about two-thirds of teachers regularly use these tools. However, many educators and researchers warn that these tools should not be viewed as infallible. False positives are not only common, but they also disproportionately affect certain groups, including neurodivergent students and non-native English speakers.

Turnitin, one of the most popular AI detection tools, has acknowledged that its technology has a 4% false positive rate when analyzing individual sentences. In response to concerns, some schools, like Vanderbilt University, have even turned off Turnitin’s AI detection feature, noting that hundreds of student papers would have been wrongly flagged.

Furthermore, AI detectors can be easily manipulated by automated tools that rewrite AI-generated content to make it appear human-written. This “arms race” between AI tools and AI detectors is creating a climate of mistrust and anxiety in classrooms, with little educational value. Teachers are left navigating a murky landscape, trying to balance the benefits of AI detection tools with their limitations.

The Impact on Student Learning and Trust

Students are increasingly wary of using legitimate online writing assistance tools, like Grammarly, out of fear they might trigger AI detection systems. Many students have uninstalled writing aids that they previously relied on for grammar checks and structure suggestions. In some cases, even basic grammar corrections can lead to a human-written document being flagged as AI-generated.

Nathan Mendoza, a junior studying chemical engineering at the University of California, San Diego, uses GPTZero to prescreen his assignments. He reports spending more time tweaking his word choices to avoid false flags than on completing the actual assignment. This has diminished the quality of his writing, as he intentionally simplifies his language to reduce the chances of being accused of using AI.

Other students are turning to “AI humanizer” tools that alter AI-generated text to bypass detection systems. In a test conducted by Bloomberg, a service called Hix Bypass dramatically reduced the likelihood of an essay being flagged as AI-generated, highlighting the ease with which students can exploit loopholes in the system.

Moving Forward: A More Thoughtful Approach to AI in Education

As AI detection tools become more ingrained in educational institutions, it is clear that a more nuanced approach is needed. Some educators are already adapting. Adam Lloyd, an English professor at the University of Maryland, chooses not to rely on Turnitin or other detection tools. Instead, he prefers to use his intuition and engage students in open discussions if he suspects any issues. “I know my students’ writing, and if I have a suspicion, I’ll have an open discussion—not automatically accuse them,” he explains.

The current system, which relies heavily on AI detection tools, is creating an unsustainable environment of suspicion and anxiety for both students and teachers. AI is undoubtedly here to stay, but the challenge lies in integrating it into education in a way that fosters trust, fairness, and meaningful learning experiences.

For students like Moira Olmsted, the fear of being falsely accused has led to obsessive documentation and alterations in writing style that detract from the learning process. And with AI technology rapidly evolving, schools will need to reconsider how they incorporate these tools, ensuring that they do not compromise the integrity or well-being of the students they aim to serve.

In the words of Professor Lloyd, “Artificial intelligence is going to be a part of the future whether we like it or not. Viewing AI as something we need to keep out of the classroom or discourage students from using is misguided.” Instead, educators must find ways to embrace AI while ensuring that it enhances rather than undermines the student experience.
