Artificial Intelligence (AI) once stood as the prime villain during the historic Hollywood strikes, with countless signs declaring "AI is SOULLESS." Fast forward to today, and AI is now making its way into the entertainment industry, even finding a place in Oscar-winning films. The transformation has been swift and controversial, with debates raging on whether AI will revolutionize cinema or spell its downfall.

From Protest to Production: The Changing Role of AI in Hollywood

Inside a soundstage once frequented by silent film legends like Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand, Hollywood's elite gathered to witness what some hail as the industry's biggest breakthrough since sound in film: AI-generated video. At the center of this transformation is Bryn Mooser, co-founder of Moonvalley, an AI-driven production company. At a party hosted by Moonvalley, Mooser shared his vision of using AI ethically by paying creators for their work. "Artists should be at the table," he said, emphasizing the importance of keeping filmmakers at the forefront of innovation.

AI in Film: A Double-Edged Sword

The rapid adoption of AI in Hollywood comes just two years after actors and writers brought the industry to a standstill, demanding safeguards against the technology. Yet, two Oscar-nominated films, Emilia Perez and The Brutalist, have embraced AI to enhance performances. Adrian Brody, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist, used AI to fine-tune his Hungarian accent. The technology has also been employed to de-age stars like Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford.

A Technological Revolution or a Threat to Creativity?

Despite its growing presence, AI remains a contentious topic. While filmmakers experiment with the technology, the threat of job displacement looms large. According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, background actors are most vulnerable to being replaced, while A-list actors and directors are relatively safe due to their star power. The fear among creators is palpable, with protests ongoing outside studios over the use of AI in video games and other media.

Major tech companies like OpenAI and Google face legal challenges from writers, actors, and news organizations accusing them of using copyrighted materials without consent. At the same time, these companies argue that current U.S. copyright laws hinder their ability to compete with China. To address this, they are pushing for "fair use" of copyrighted content to train AI models. However, many in Hollywood, including a group of 400 A-list stars, have voiced strong opposition, fearing it will undermine creative industries.

A New Era of Filmmaking

While opinions remain divided, one thing is certain: AI is here to stay. From generating realistic visuals to fine-tuning performances, the technology holds immense potential to reshape the filmmaking process. Moonvalley's vision is to put artists at the center, using AI as a supportive tool rather than a replacement.

As Hollywood navigates this new landscape, the future of cinema hangs in the balance. Will AI become an indispensable creative ally, or will it erode the human touch that makes storytelling so compelling? Only time will tell.
